The Cruising Yacht Club of Australia’s Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race commences this Sunday at 1pm (26-Jul-2014) and former Wallaby and now Land Rover ambassador Phil Waugh will join Anthony Bell’s Perpetual LOYAL crew as attempt to take line honours from Bob Oatley’s super maxi Wild Oats XI, who as an aside is the current race record holder.

Starting at Nielsen Park the race will comprise 56 yachts who will make their way down the picturesque Sydney Harbour and through the heads before turning left to head to the finish line  off Main Beach at Southport, on Queensland’s Gold Coast, some 384 nautical miles to the north of Sydney.

While this will be Phil’s first Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race, Phil has a number of races under his belt having been with the Perpetual LOYAL team over the past 5 years. Like his days as a Wallaby, Phil is not unaccustomed to hard training and preparation and in the lead up to the Land Rover Sydney Gold Coast Yacht Race Phil and the crew have been in training for months for the race. While Phil acknowledges its going to be a tight contest he hopes that with the preparation that he and the team have put in that they may be able to ward off the competition to take line honours.

Joining Phil, in what will be his ocean racing debut, is Australian cricket captain Michael Clarke.  When asked Clarke said the 384 nautical mile race would take him well outside his comfort zone and professional sporting career.

Will Perpetual LOYAL be successful only time will tell.
