Mini Cooper Countryman performs well on US crash test
Along with 11 other small and compact cars the Mini Cooper Countryman faced the pole crash test as carried out by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety in the USA. The result? The Mini Cooper Countryman was the only car out of the twelve vehicles tested to achieve the highest score and as a result received the “Top Safety Pick award”.
In receiving the award the instituted stated “of the twelve models tested, the Mini Cooper Countrymanis the only vehicle in the small car segment to achieve the top score of “good” on the small overlap front crash test.”
The test simulates a head on collision with an immovable object at a speed of around 64 kilometres per hour. The difference between this test and the crash test commonly performed in Europe is that rather than striking an obstacle off centre in this test the collision is against a post that only covers a quarter of the front section of the vehicle. This means that under this test it is not possible to absorb the entire impact energy and the deformation is more extreme in the areas affected.
To achieve the score that the Mini Cooper Countryman did the passenger cell of the vehicle must remain intact and the airbags must interact with the seat belts to help avoid head injuries. If at any stage the passenger cell creases or the seats and airbags are shifted then the result is adversely affected.
The Mini Cooper Countryman, which was launched in 2010, already has a 5 star Euro NCAP rating and this new award further demonstrates how a car can be fun while also extremely safe.
