Protect the Stig.
What is it with some people?
You know the ones I am talking about,
– Those who need to reveal the ending for movies such as The Crying Game, Sixth Sense,
– and tell a little child about Christmas, the Easter bunny, the tooth fairy,
– and tells people, who dies in the series cliff hanger for your favourite soap
Are they:
– Insecure?
– Seeking notoriety or infamy? or
– Just pains in the proverbial?
Well Harper Collins, the multi national publishers fall into the above category and why?
Because they are proposing to reveal the identity of The Stig from Top Gear in an autobiography to be published in the lead up to Christmas. So Merry Christmas to all us loyal Top Gear fans from Harper Collins.
The mystery and anonymity of “The Stig” is what we, as grown adults, adore. Sure we all know that there are hundreds of thousands of articles on the web speculating who “The Stig” is but unless we search for it his/her identity will not be revealed.
This Christmas, through the actions of Harper Collins this will all change. As we walk through the shopping centre past our favourite book stores we will inevitably be confronted by publicity for this book including I am sure photos of “The Stig” unveiled.
On line surveys, such as that in the Worcester News (www.worcesternews.co.uk), are deafening in their resolve that the public does not want to know the identity of “The Stig”.
So why is Harper Collins doing this? The answer is simple…….to capitalise on the success of Top Gear in order to sell books and make their shareholders money.
Scouring my bookshelves I see a number of Harper Collins published books from the Sharpe novels by Bernard Cornwell to Hangman by Faye Kellerman. I begin to wonder now whether these should be relegated to the basement. And in a further act of defiance I will also cease to purchase any book published by Harper Collins until this matter is resolved.
My message to Harper Collins is clear……………….leave us loyal Top Gear fans alone.
