Audi A3 ETron Now Available in Europe
As of today Europeans are able to place orders for the first plug in hybrid from Audi, the Audi A3 Etron. Comprising a 1.4 TFSI petrol engine and an electric motor the Audi A3 Etron generates 150kw (204hp) of power yet has a miserly fuel consumption of 1.5 litres per 100 kilometres meaning that you could travel from Melbourne to Sydney on less than 15 litres of petrol.
Relying solely on the electric power the Audi A3 Etron has a range of 50 kilometres but when in combined mode this is increased to a staggering 900 kilometres.
In Germany the starting price for the Audi A3 Etron will be 37,900 euros and in the future it is envisaged that each of the dedicated ETron dealers (in Germany) will offer customers access to a charging station. In terms of other charging options, having been to Europe recently it is evident that the Europeans are more accepting of this technology than Australians and in many cities have already set up charging stations for some types of electric and hybrid cars. According to Audi the Audi A3 Etron is able to charged quickly at either an Audi dealer, or at one of the public charging stations or at home.
The fact that the major car companies are now embracing hybrid and sole electrical power for its vehicles should mean that in the short term such vehicles will become more competitively priced and advancements in ranges and charging will also occur.
Whether the Audi A3 Etron will be available in Australia is yet to be seen but what is evident is that Australia needs to ensure that it commences to establish the needed infrastructure for this type of vehicle as it is clearly the way of the future.
