Ford Fiesta ECOnetic: Fuel efficiency and CO2 emissions are both hot topics in the world media and in the lead up to the Copenhagen World Conference the Global Green Challenge was held in the driest continent on earth, Australia. Covering a whopping 3,147 kilometres between Darwin and Adelaide the aim of the Eco Challenge component of the challenge was to see which car would use the least fuel.

Entrants in this challenge included cars from major manufacturers including Suzuki, Hyundai, Holden, Kia, Skoda, and Mini as well as experimental vehicles from universities and research agencies.

Ford’s entry in the A class was the diesel powered Ford Fiesta ECOnetic. Not only did the Ford Fiesta win its class but most importantly proved itself to be the most fuel efficient production class vehicle in the challenge averaging 3.1 litres per 100 kilometres and consuming only 98 litres of fuel over the challenge

In addition over the drive from Coober Pedy to Alice Springs fuel consumption in the Ford Fiesta ECOnetic dropped to an amazing 2.9 litres per 100 kilometres. To put this into comparison I recently drove the same road in a Mitsubishi Pajero diesel and the best I could achieve was 11.1 litres per 100 kilometres.

The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic has thrown down the gauntlet to other manufacturers and in the long term the winner will be us the consumer with more fuel efficient and environmentally friendly cars.

The Ford Fiesta ECOnetic is available from $24,990 and comes standard with numerous safety options including front passenger and driver airbags, ABS and EBD as well as Dynamic Stability Control and Traction Control.
