Hyundai Genesis – Vanilla not Chocolate

Remember the Hyundai S Coupe? Originally released in the early 1990s the S Coupe or “Scoop” was based on the Hyundai Excel but with a more sporty design. Competing against the Toyota Celica, Ford Capri and Holden Calibra the Hyundai S Coupe never stood a chance.

Fast forward 20 + years. Throw in the significant evolution of the Hyundai Motor Company. The result – the Hyundai Genesis Coupe.

The Genesis is available with the choice of either two engines, the Theta 2 litre  TCI (turbo charged intercooler) engine with 202kw of power and 373Nm of torque or the Lambda 3.8 litre V6 GDI (Gasoline Direct Injection) with 257kw of power and 400Nm of torque. Both engines represent a significant improvement on previous models. The increased power is complemented by an eight speed automatic transmission.

In terms of looks the Hyundai Genesis is what I would describe as vanilla when what I am really after is rich dark chocolate. I am sure that the design with its integrated grill, sweeping headlights, sports lines and rear spoiler and LED tail lights will experience mass market appeal but for me it lacks that point of differentiation which would make me choose it above the competition.

The Hyundai Genesis, which is not available in Australia, is further evidence of Hyundai’s evolution into brand which adopts safe and proven design options rather than attempting to push the boundaries.
