As of February 11, 2011, Kia released photos of its new generation Kia Rio sedan and hatch which is to be unveiled at the Geneva International Motor Show in March.

The new design, according to Kia, has been centred around appealing to customers from all around the world through a design which combines “European finesse with Korean spice to create a form language that communicates Latin flair.”

The Kia Rio will be available in three body styles with 3, 4 or 5 doors. With a slightly longer (by 7cm) wheelbase than its predecessor the new Rio should offer greater passenger space and comfort.

With a commitment to a more sportier design this means that the new Rio sits 1.5 cm lower and is 2.5 cm wider and overall 5.5cm longer than its predecessor. Cargo capacity in both the sedan and hatchback has also been increased. All of which is further evidence of the enlarging of previously categorised small cars.

In order to improve its market acceptance in a highly competitive market the new Rio will offer a higher level of interior fitout which has previously been only available on the larger models within the Kia range.

Kia through its R&D has developed what is being promoted as six fuel-efficient and low-CO2 engines. The engines will range from a 1.1-litre diesel unit generating 51.5kW in Europe, up to a 1.6-litre GDI petrol engine producing 103kW for North America.

While only having seen the press release photos it is evident that Kia are positioning the Rio to compete strongly in the small to medium car market and according to Kia’s Director of Overseas Marketing Soon-Nam Lee Kia has developed a car “which is extremely attractive, that people will want to buy for its looks.”

The press release photos indicate that the new Kia Rio will indeed have a sporty feel, from its low profile tyres, sweeping side styling, confronting and sporty front grill, rear spoiler with central aerial and its colour coded bumpers and mirrors.

We at Carhq.com.au look forward to road testing this new version of the proven Kia Rio upon its release in Australia.
