Porsche 928 The Restoration Begins

Porsche 928 The Restoration Part 1: Recently I had the misfortune of someone damaging the front driver’s side mudguard of my beloved Porsche 928. This person, and I use the term lightly, did not have the decency to acknowledge their indiscretion but instead drove off or skulked away in the dark leaving me and my insurance company to fix the damage left in their wake.

Letting the anger subside, I drove the car to Paint and Custom in Thornbury where I knew that it would be looked after as one of their own. The prognosis from John and Louie was that Porsche could be saved. Thankful of this I decided that it was time to invest in some cosmetic repairs to the old girl, as she is 28 years old and was starting to show the signs of age.

With a matter of days I received the quote for the total respray and freshen and gave the green light to go ahead with the restoration while I scoured the internet for parts to replace aging or broken ones.

Over the first couple of weeks the Porsche has been prepared, sanded, rust removed, obselete holes and imperfections rectified. The interior has also bee removed and sent to Motorcraft Motor Trimmers in Coburg for minor repairs and rectification works. I have sourced parts from a variety of places but would recommend 928 International in America for their prompt service, range of products and prices although the current exchange rate has also helped alot.

Dealing with the insurance company, which happens to be Shannons, has thus far been a breeze and in the first instance it was handled quickly over the phone and then I was able to select my repairer of choice, which was Paint and Custom.

The following photos shows the current progression of the full restoration of my Porsche 928.
