BMW X3 – Review (2011)

The BMW X3 is a compact SUV released to capitalise on the phenomenal success of its larger brother the X5. Sharing many styling similarities to the X5 the X3 provides the badge which many a purchaser seeks these days and to a lesser extent the quality that BMW is known for.

When originally released the BMW X3 received significant criticism from reviewers due to its harsh ride, reliance on plastic in interior styling and its limited off road capability.

However, when considering that the typical purchaser of the X3 would only use the off road capability to traverse the occasional  kerb and gutter on the way to drop the kids off at school this criticism had limited impact.

After his road test Jeremy Clarkson of Top Gear fame said that the X3 was for people who are clinically insane, however, I consider that he was missing the point of the BMW X3 and who its ultimate purchasers would be.

The BMW X3 has now become a staple at private school drop off time and mainly due to the reputation which BMW has rather than the quality of the product.

From my perspective the BMW X3 is a practical SUV similar in use and capability to the Honda CRV, Subaru Forrester and Volkswagen Tiguan albeit in a different price range.

The ability to load it up with luggage for a long weekend, or alternatively all the groceries for the large family make it attractive and a versatile vehicle and the inclusion of a diesel engine means improved fuel economy.

While the ride has been described as harsh it must be remembered that this is not a sedan but and SUV and accordingly a certain level of compromise must be made and overall the ride is comfortable and most importantly responsive.

The size of the BMW X3 makes manoeuvring around the local supermarket carpark a breeze when compared to its larger brother the X5 and road height provides increased visibility.

Overall the BMW X3 fills a defined niche in the market place and offers a quality product albeit at a price.
