The Volkswagen Amarok Ute v The Australian Outback

Can a Volkswagen Amarok tow a 32 tonne road train? Well if it is a Volkswagen Amarok ute it can.

As a Dakar Rally support vehicle, the Volkswagen Amarok has been exposed to harsh and challenging conditions but is it tough enough to withstand two teams of tradies and the harsh Australian outback? To find out we will need to tune into The Rok Adventure on One on Saturday (26th November 2011) at 6.30pm.

The Rok Adventure, a joint Volkswagen and Network 10 production,is the culmination of an online competition which sought to find two teams of Australia’s “toughest” tradies and pit them against five extreme challenges in an attempt to win a Volkswagen Amarok ute.

The Tricky Brickies are best mates Mark Pratt, Trevor James and Daniel Rutter who not only socialise but sling bricks together six days a week in Melbourne.

The Three Wise Monkeys from Sydney are best mates cabinet maker Alex Henderson, metal fabricator Andrew Cherni and electrician Mike Reid.

The teams will drive their Volkswagen Amarok ute from the beach to the bush and face a series of five extreme challenges along the way. The challenges include extreme four wheel driving in the Blue Mountains, building sheep yards in Orange, searching old mine sites in Cobar and getting down and dirty with big boys toys in Broken Hill. The challenges were designed to test not only the teams but also the machine while most importantly being entertaining to the viewer. So expect to see teams dealing with punishing conditions, the best and worst of teams, mates defecting to the other side and tight time frames.

The Rok Adventure is produced by Mediacom and TV production company Southern Star Entertainment, so the production values are quite high.

Gemma Newland from Mediacom observed “The Rok Adventure was created first and foremost to entertain the audience, we developed all the challenges to highlight and test specific features of the Amarok such as torque, load baring, towing capacity and off road capabilities but in ways you have never seen before. It was vital that the Amarok was tested under Aussie conditions in order to prove it’s toughness in a highly competitive market.”

While Jason Franklin from Southern Star Entertainment noted “The Rok Adventure is simply a great fun watch. We sent a team of almost 30 people in a convoy of nine Volkswagen vehicles across 3,000kms of some of the toughest roads and places in outback Australia. And I’m pleased to say not only did everyone come back safe and sound, and with their sense of humour still intact, but not one of the Volkswagen vehicles missed a beat. So I think we certainly achieved what we set out to prove!”

So if you are in the market to purchase a Volkswagen Amarok or enjoy extreme challenges the The Rok Adventure is for you.
